The Official Opening Ceremony of the Entire Highway Extension in Southern Sri Lanka Was Held
On February 23, the official opening ceremony of the first section of the Expressway Extension in South Sri Lanka (Matara to Beliatta)—a “Belt and Road” key project undertaken by AVIC-Eng with loans from The Export-Import Bank of China was held in Matara. Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Cheng Xueyuan, Economic and Commercial Counsellor Yang Zuoyuan, and Chief of Political Section Luo Chong attended the ceremony to uncover the monument and cut the ribbon. Ma Xiang, the head of The Export-Import Bank of China working group in Sri Lanka, and Liu Hongguang, Chairman of AVIC-Eng, were invited to attend the ceremony.
During the ceremony, AVIC-Eng donated school supplies such as schoolbags and stationery to schools along the extension. AVIC-Eng has made constant contribution to the rise of Sri Lanka’s economy by devoting itself to Sri Lanka’s engineering market for ten years. While AVIC-Eng team is making considerable efforts to operate its business, it actively takes practical actions to full its social responsibility as a central State-owned enterprise, is committed to supporting the improvement of local people’s livelihood and education, and constantly strengthens AVIC-Eng’s influence in the Sri Lankan government and all walks of life.
A CCTV reporter interviewed Liu Hongguang about the project’s pre-planning, challenges and focuses during implementation as well as successful completion ahead of schedule. Liu Hongguang adequately responded from the aspects of quality, progress, measures taken and social benefit.
The 96-kilometer extension of the southern Sri Lanka highway is one of the key projects jointly carried out by the Chinese and Sri Lankan governments in implementing the “Belt and Road” initiative. The ceremony marked the simultaneous opening of four sections of southern highway extension from Matara to Hambantota.
The official operation of the project will significantly shorten the time from Colombo to Hambantota Port, facilitate the flow of people and logistics between these two ports and trade zones, and promote the further development of the Sri Lankan economy.
